TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY

Recruiting guidance for track, field, and cross country families — where the times do the talking.

How Track & Cross Country Scholarships Work

Track and field is an equivalency sport, and it is the most spread-out scholarship pool in college athletics: a Division I coach divides a small number of scholarships across sprinters, distance runners, throwers, jumpers, and vaulters. Partial offers are the rule, and many roster spots come with no athletic money at all.

But track has an advantage no other sport can match: your mark is your résumé. There is no projection, no film debate, and no subjective evaluation. A coach can look up your time and know exactly where you would finish in their conference.

Scholarship and roster limits are set by each governing body and have changed recently. Confirm current numbers with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA.

Know the Standards, Then Email Them

This is the most straightforward recruiting process in college sports, and the most under-used. Every program publishes or will share its recruiting standards — the marks that make an athlete useful to them. Look up the roster, find the current times and distances in your event, and be honest about where yours fit.

Then email. Track coaches respond to specific, brief emails with verified marks, because a mark tells them everything film would. Most families never send them, which is why athletes with genuinely recruitable times end up walking on somewhere by accident.

Marks must come from certified, verifiable meets. Coaches look them up — unverifiable personal bests do more harm than good.

The Track & Cross Country Calendar

Three seasons a year means near-constant evaluation — and three chances a year to produce a mark that changes your recruitment.

Contact periods, dead periods, and signing dates differ by division and change periodically. Confirm current dates with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA. Want this mapped to your athlete’s graduation year? That’s what the free consultation produces.

Where the Rest of the Money Comes From

With athletic money split so many ways, academics do real work. Strong grades and test scores unlock merit awards that stack on top of any athletic offer, and Division III—no athletic money at all—frequently produces the lowest net cost of any offer a family receives.

See how scholarship stacking works, then run your family’s real number before comparing offers.
