SOCCER

Recruiting guidance and preparation for soccer student-athletes.

How Soccer Scholarships Actually Work

Soccer is an equivalency sport, so a coach splits a limited pool across a roster of 25 or more. Full rides are rare; partial offers are the standard, and they’re usually combined with academic and need-based aid to get a family to a number that works.

Women’s programs carry more scholarship money than men’s at every NCAA level—an advantage worth understanding early.

Scholarship and roster limits are set by each governing body and have changed recently. Confirm current numbers with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA.

Club Soccer Is Where Recruiting Happens

More than in any other sport on this site, soccer recruiting runs through club, not high school. College coaches attend ECNL, MLS NEXT, and Girls Academy showcase events where dozens of programs watch the same field. Your high school season matters to you; your club season is what coaches plan their travel around.

That makes event selection strategic, not optional. One showcase attended by the schools on your list is worth more than three tournaments where nobody on your list appears. Email coaches your schedule and jersey number before the event—coaches watch players they came to see.

Soccer film should include full-match footage, not just highlights — coaches want to see decisions when you don’t have the ball.

The Soccer Recruiting Calendar

Soccer recruiting follows the club calendar, not the high school one. College coaches plan their travel around showcase weekends, so the events you enter matter as much as how you play in them.

THE TWO DATES THAT DECIDE THE MOST
JUNE 15 AFTER SOPHOMORE YEAR
The first date Division I coaches may contact most recruits directly. Your film, club schedule, and academics should already be in their hands before it arrives.
THE FALL SHOWCASE CIRCUIT
ECNL, MLS NEXT, and Girls Academy showcase weekends draw dozens of college staffs to one complex. More recruiting happens on those weekends than in an entire high school season.

Contact periods, dead periods, and signing dates differ by division and sport and change periodically. Confirm current dates with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA before planning around them.

Where the Rest of the Money Comes From

With soccer money split so many ways, academics do real work. Coaches favor strong students because merit aid stretches a thin scholarship budget, and Division III soccer—no athletic money at all—frequently produces the lowest net cost of any offer a family receives.

See how scholarship stacking works, then run your family’s real number before comparing offers.
