BOYS BASKETBALL

Recruiting guidance and preparation for basketball families — from AAU to signing day.

How Basketball Scholarships Actually Work

Men’s basketball is a headcount sport at the Division I level, which means an offer is all or nothing. There are no partial D1 offers: if a program has a scholarship for your son, it covers tuition, housing, meals, and books in full.

The tradeoff is scarcity. Each D1 program carries a small number of scholarships and signs only two or three players a year, and with the transfer portal, many of those spots now go to proven college players rather than high school seniors. Below D1, basketball works on equivalencies and partial offers stack with academic aid.

LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR FAMILY

Scholarship and roster limits are set by each governing body and have changed recently. Confirm current numbers with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA.

The Portal Changed High School Recruiting

This is the honest conversation most services avoid. A Division I coach who needs a point guard can now sign a 21-year-old with two years of college production instead of projecting an 18-year-old. That has compressed the number of high school scholarships available at the top level, and it has made D2, NAIA, and junior college more important paths, not lesser ones.

What it means practically: your son needs to be genuinely realistic about level, and he needs to be excellent at the things a coach can verify — grades, motor, and role clarity. The player who knows exactly what he is on a roster gets recruited over the player who thinks he is everything.

WHAT COACHES EVALUATE

Coaches watch how a player behaves on the bench and after a bad call as closely as they watch his jump shot.

The Basketball Recruiting Calendar

Basketball recruiting is built around NCAA live periods — a handful of weekends when college coaches may evaluate in person. Everything else in the year is preparation for those weekends.

Contact periods, dead periods, and signing dates differ by division and change periodically. Confirm current dates with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA. Want this mapped to your athlete’s graduation year? That’s what the free consultation produces.

Where the Rest of the Money Comes From

With athletic money split so many ways, academics do real work. Strong grades and test scores unlock merit awards that stack on top of any athletic offer, and Division III—no athletic money at all—frequently produces the lowest net cost of any offer a family receives.

See how scholarship stacking works, then run your family’s real number before comparing offers.

BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER EVALUATION

Is my athlete good enough — and for what level?

A written basketball evaluation from a coach, not a salesperson. Film, transcript, and metrics reviewed against real division benchmarks, with a report you can act on.

WHAT WE WATCH

Two full games plus a highlight reel. Full games show defense, decision-making under pressure, and how the athlete plays when the ball is not in his hands.

WHAT WE MEASURE
  • Height, wingspan, and standing reach, verified
  • Vertical jump and lane agility
  • Shooting numbers from a tracked workout
  • Per-game production against the level of competition

Positional and size benchmarks for D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO, with a read on positional fit at the next level.

WHAT ONLY A BOYS BASKETBALL EVALUATION TELLS YOU

Whether the AAU circuit your athlete is on is being scouted at the right level, whether a prep year or JUCO is a real path or a detour, and how academic money works in a sport where most scholarships are full but scarce.
