PORTAL DECISION WORKSHEET

Before an athlete enters the transfer portal, the family needs honest answers to nine questions — because entering is easy, and what happens after is not. Answer each one honestly; the worksheet keeps score.

READ THIS FIRST

The moment an athlete enters the portal, the current school can pull the scholarship — and most portal entrants do not end up somewhere better. Roughly half find a new roster spot at all. The portal rewards athletes coaches are already calling about, and punishes athletes running from a problem that travels with them.

The money rules

Athletic aid does not transfer — it is renegotiated from zero at the new school. Academic money usually re-prices too, and credits that don’t transfer can add a paid semester. Run the new school through the True Cost Calculator before entering, not after.

The timing rules

Each sport has portal windows — miss the window and the year is gone. Grad transfers move the most freely. And nothing is real until an offer at the new school is in writing: leaving a roster spot for a maybe is how athletes end up with neither.
