GIRLS BASKETBALL

Recruiting guidance and preparation for girls basketball student-athletes.

How Girls Basketball Scholarships Actually Work

Women’s basketball is one of the few headcount sports at the Division I level—which means an offer is all or nothing. There are no 40% offers at D1: if a program has a scholarship for your daughter, it covers tuition, housing, meals, and books in full.

That’s a genuine advantage over most girls’ sports. The tradeoff is scarcity—each D1 program has a small number of scholarships and signs only two or three players a year. Below D1, basketball works on equivalencies, and partial offers stack with academic aid.

Scholarship and roster limits are set by each governing body and have changed recently. Confirm current numbers with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA.

Summer AAU Is the Recruiting Calendar

College coaches build their evaluation around July live periods, when hundreds of teams play in one place and a staff can see forty players in a day. High school season matters—coaches watch film from it and call your high school coach—but summer travel ball is where the list gets made.

Choose events where programs on your list actually attend, and email those coaches your schedule and jersey number beforehand. A coach with your name on a notepad watches differently than one scanning a gym.

The Girls Basketball Recruiting Calendar

Basketball recruiting is built around NCAA live periods — a handful of weekends when college coaches are permitted to evaluate in person. Everything else in the year is preparation for those weekends.

THE TWO DATES THAT DECIDE THE MOST
JUNE 15 AFTER SOPHOMORE YEAR
The first date Division I coaches may contact most recruits directly. Your film, GPA, and travel schedule should already be with them before that day.
THE JULY LIVE PERIODS
The single most important stretch of the year. College staffs see hundreds of players in a few days, and most classes take shape from what they watch in July.

Contact periods, dead periods, and signing dates differ by division and sport and change periodically. Confirm current dates with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA before planning around them.

Want this calendar mapped to your athlete’s graduation year and schedule? That’s what the free consultation produces.

Don’t Chase D1 Past the Right Fit

A full D1 scholarship at a program where your daughter sits for four years is worth less than a partial at a D2 or NAIA school where she plays, develops, and graduates happy. Division III offers no athletic money but often the best academic packages—and frequently the lowest real cost of any offer on the table.

See how scholarship stacking works, then run your family’s real number before comparing offers.
