BASEBALL

Recruiting guidance and preparation for baseball student-athletes.

How Baseball Scholarships Actually Work

Baseball is an equivalency sport with a large roster and a small pool of money. A coach divides what he has across 30-plus players, which is why the overwhelming majority of offers are partial—often 15% to 50%. A 25% offer from a good Division I program is a legitimate offer, not a lowball.

Here’s the landscape by level:

LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR FAMILY

Scholarship and roster limits are set by each governing body and have changed recently. Confirm current numbers with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA.

Baseball Recruits Earlier Than Almost Any Sport

Top Division I programs identify players as sophomores and often fill classes before senior year begins. That does not mean it’s over if your athlete isn’t on a board yet—plenty of players earn offers late, especially pitchers who add velocity. But it does mean waiting until senior fall to build film and a target list puts you behind.

It also means the transfer portal and junior college are now a bigger part of the picture than they used to be. Rosters turn over every year, and a strong JUCO season is one of the most reliable ways into a Division I program.

THE NUMBERS COACHES ASK FOR FIRST

Verified numbers from a recognized event carry far more weight than numbers a family reports. Radar readings and pop times get checked.

The Baseball Recruiting Calendar

Baseball runs on two calendars at once: a high school season in the spring and a travel season that decides recruiting. Coaches follow the second one. Here is what a properly run year looks like.

THE TWO DATES THAT DECIDE THE MOST
AUGUST 1 BEFORE JUNIOR YEAR
The first date Division I baseball coaches may contact recruits directly. Your velocity, exit velo, and academics need to be documented well before it — top programs already know who they want.
FALL OF JUNIOR YEAR
Fall ball is baseball’s heaviest recruiting stretch. College staffs are out in force between their own seasons, and classes fill quickly once they start making calls.

Contact periods, dead periods, and signing dates differ by division and sport and change periodically. Confirm current dates with the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA before planning around them.

Where the Rest of the Money Comes From

Because baseball money is spread so thin, academics carry real weight. Coaches recruit strong students because merit aid frees up roster money—a 3.8 GPA can make your athlete more attractive than a slightly better player with a 2.7. In many cases the academic package is larger than the athletic one.

Division III programs offer no athletic money but often deliver the lowest net cost of anyone on your list. See how scholarship stacking works and run your family’s real number before you compare offers.

BASEBALL PLAYER EVALUATION

Is my athlete good enough — and for what level?

A written baseball evaluation from a coach, not a salesperson. Film, transcript, and metrics reviewed against real division benchmarks, with a report you can act on.

WHAT WE WATCH

Two full games plus a highlight reel. For pitchers we want every pitch from one outing, not a strikeout montage. For position players, at-bats against live arms and defensive reps at game speed.

WHAT WE MEASURE
  • Exit velocity and bat speed
  • Pop time (catchers) or arm velocity from position
  • 60-yard dash
  • Fastball velocity, spin, and off-speed command (pitchers)

Benchmarks by position for D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO, so the gap is in numbers, not adjectives.

WHAT ONLY A BASEBALL EVALUATION TELLS YOU

Whether your athlete profiles as a two-way player or should specialize, which showcases in your region actually have coaches at the right level, and how academic money changes the list in a sport where most athletic aid is partial.

WHAT YOU GET
  • Written report: strengths and fixable gaps with film timestamps
  • Realistic level today and the ceiling if the plan is executed
  • Metric gaps to the target level, in numbers
  • NCAA core GPA as the clearinghouse calculates it, with course flags
  • Starter target list: 12–15 programs in three bands
  • Which camps and showcases on your calendar to skip
